Artist's Description

Part of the main panel at Game Pass, in the Drakensberg Mts, Natal, South Africa. The image shows a number of eland (large antelope) superimposed over several disproportionate karossed (cloaked) people. Further hunters can be seen running madly across the background, and a number of older paintings, now washed away, show as cleaner white shapes on the shelter wall.

That is the first clue that this is not a simple composition: in fact it is a collage of superimposed images: it is believed that superimposition perhaps reinforces the magical power of the image. We are in any case dealing not with the real world here, but with the spirit world and the (white-faced) shamans who are interacting with it. (for further explanation, see my picture “An entrancing tail” at http://www.redbubble.com/people/trobe/works/636... )

The shelter at Game Pass is one of hundreds found along the upper sandstones of the Drakensberg – appropriately the beds are known as the “Cave Sandstones” This area of the mountains has some of the best preserved polychrome prehistoric art in the country.
Taken on a visit in 1980.
