97th in the rear view mirror

97th in the rear view mirror

Going fishing,
driving through the city,
on a sunny day,
I see,I see,I see,
the world
is full of old people
in fancy cars,
young people
sitting on top of death,
poor people trudging along,
rich people
ignoring one and all
never answering their call,
then there is the rest of us,
making our way,
trying to stay alive ,
as the rats nibble at the door,
looking for a freebee
everyone wants a freebee,
even me,
i am surrounded,
as i trudge through life,
holding tightly,
to my simple thoughts
simple mind,
simple words,
the masses
chasing woman,
chasing men,
chasing money,
finding sin,
ignoring God,
as lady death looks on,
get out of my way,
get out of my way,
we laugh,
as we putter along,
in my poor mans car,
singing our poor mans song,
i have tears,
of joy in my eyes,
as i watch my boy laugh,
at the antics,
of my insanity,
we pass the pope,
which one,
i don’t know,
standing on a concrete pedestal,
outside a downtown church,
in iron robes,
and a fur coat,
enjoying the beautiful,
spring weather,
as the congregation,
stands outside on their smoke break,
looking at the heavens,
as I lose my thoughts,
in the shadow,
of the midday sun,
i see nina haggerty
coming undone,
in all the right places,
except for the broken window,
to the soul,
and the art of humanity,
churches for sale,
as God glares,
nobody cares,
steeples fall,
prosperity for all,
crushed bones,
wanton stories,
engraved with the memories
of the once alive,
now buried deep,
within the soul,
of the provider,
drawing pictures
with crushed rocks and magnesium,
wondering what happened
to the blasting caps,
another masterpiece
lost to the profundity
of humanity,
where’s Leonardo when you need him,
shattered memories,
lost dreams,
make good fodder
for those
left behind,
as the rose gardens,
of the insane,
in wonderment,
mystery and misery,
i snap out of it,
as the skies
become clear,
we drive down 97th street,
a little closer to nature,
just happy to be here,
nearer to God,
one with the world,
we high five,
as i leave the city,
in my rear view mirror,
smiling am i,
just happy to be alive,
oh no i forgot ,
the fishing rods I scream,
as the city smiles
inviting me,
