This is one of the most difficult places I’ve found to photograph; in a forest, wood, reserve or native bush area. So many slivers of light lead to blown highlights, very low light in shaded areas, contrasting colours, shapes and shades. All of which have to be brought out and made to look inviting.

I’ve tried many times to get a decent image in this beautiful natural reserve in the Taranaki region.

all critiques welcome.

I think you have done a wonderful job with this Dean. I do agree places like this are difficult to shoot but this is great, shows what a wonderful and diverse place the natural forests can be

  • thanks Selina, I’ll just have to go back and try again to get it just spot on. but I like this attempt.

Well, you certainly have aced it Dean!!! Beautiful photography and the title really melds well with the image!! The tree is reaching out to you, urgently! Perfect!! :)))

  • Thanks VIcki, I like the almost 3d effect that this conveys. The contrast too – but just that one spot that’s blown through the trees is quite annoying.

Nice one my friend … like the leading lines …
you’ve made the best of these VERY difficult light conditions … my sense is that you’d do an even better one if there was some fog/mist around … or earlier in the day with more ‘atmosphere’ – I know how good you are!!

  • probably won’t have to wait too long for that one Vik, weather is starting to turn… and this is high enough that with low cloud the mist will roll in… oh and yes there’s the a850 as well – bring on the next shot!

This is different from your usual shot Dean!! Beautiful!

  • Yes – but I’ve been trying for a long time to get some decent shots here in this reserve. It’s FULL of opportunity but getting the shot is the hard part I’ve found

Gorgeous shot Dean, I think the blown areas in the foliage give the shot an air of mystique.. I quite like this, the colour is gorgeous too!

  • thanks Simone, I tried to pull down that central highlight a bit but it had totally gone, thankfully it’s not too bright through the trees and almost looks like the light source (although I’m sure it’s just the clouds/daylight ;)
