My rock

They hurried us in to his room
We knew they’d done the deed
They said they’d only wash him…
“Keep him comfortable”
The drip inside his arm was filled
with poisons set to kill
But he was so much stronger
A heart that none could stop
Beating for us all
I felt his warmth, his presence full
Oh how I wish I had
not been so crass
How could I say such foolish words
That came from nowhere sound
His love of life had been so sweet
So loyal to his bride
Despite her many foolish ways
He’d stand above harsh words or thoughts
And stamp them out like fire
His arm was strong, but deep within I felt
the cancer grow
The battle fought on loosened soil
But still he loved her to the end
The sun was rising, how unfair
It is to wait night through
But it was fitting, night was wrong
We had to fight till light had brought
Safe passage for his flight
A tear had fallen from his eye
A tear of love, regret
His hat that I had brought for him sat
Unworn above his head
“I’ll put it on next week my dear”
The noises from his body scared
The little life within
I did not know I carried one
they went together
Born, unborn
He sat upon my shoulder there
Still so strong and warm
The figure of the old old man
Lay empty in his bed
The trumpet played
My heart collapsed
How could this pain continue
Please stop, I’m weak
I cannot smile
My rock has now moved on

My rock
