I was attempting to shoot my kids’ second cousin tonight, but my daughter hijacked the session by coming in wrapped in red silk and a race hat. Its hard to ignore her when she does that, although I do have to be very careful with her, she tends to pose way too maturely for her age. I have to mention, I do NOT pose her at any time, its all her own ideas nowadays. Anyway, this is my ‘little’ girl, for better or for worse, entering tweeniedom. I’ll let her join model mayhem when she’s much older…..

That is great. What is the light source? It looks like quite a narrow stream of light. Maybe it is just her skin reflecting and the red absorbing a little?
No, its a softbox to camera left – I just did an overlay in B&W at 53% to give it the edge, thats all the PP on this one. Did you see the eye? :-)

Wonderful capture, the thing that amazes me about your portraits continuously is 1. such great lighting, and 2. such strong but not overly stated colours and such soft skin tones. I blame MTV for the advanced poses lol.. wait do they still have MTV?
haha, its not MTV in Kate’s case – its my other models – she watches the results (not the shoots) with far more interest than I ever realise, then comes out with some amazing poses. This one was one of the only ones I would accept from her at her age, the rest have been relegated to ‘too old and no darling, I can’t put that one up on the bubble’, lol. xo

Yes, they’re all 10 going on sixteen. Very lovely lighting; you’ll have to show me :) And she does have a nature flair for posing. A fine modeling future ahead if she’s still keen.
Its such a simple setup, one light, thats it, then a tiny bit of B&W overlay in PP. The key is the gorgeous Eli 500, nice big softbox, and one 9 year old with perfect skin…. :-)
Actually she’d get a real kick out of sitting for you if you’re interested, just for a moment maybe.
