More than 11 billion bags are distributed in the UK every year. In December 2008, the Government and Britain’s leading supermarkets agreed a 50% cut in the number of single-use carrier bags given out by spring 2009. The number of bags saved through this agreement would fill 60 Olympic-sized swimming pools, or fill the Royal Albert Hall one and a half times.
The Government expects that the agreement will result in a reduction of some 4.5 billion bags per year. This will save 130,000 tonnes of CO2 e.q. equivalent to taking 41,000 cars off the road each year.
• Each adult receives on average nearly 300 disposable bags every year.
• 88% of shoppers currently put all their shopping into free carrier bags.
On average shoppers take 3 – 4 bags at every shopping trip.
• 45% of shoppers claim to have bought a Bag for Life but only 12% use one regularly.
