This was the peaceful view from one of our hotel windows in Gaming (pronounced Gahming), Austria.
Our daughter was spending a semester abroad with her university – Franciscan University of Steubenville, and we visited her just after Easter 2003.
The former Carthusian abbey of Maria Thron dates back to the 1330s and was renovated by architect Walter Hildebrand who purchased the property in 1984. Serving since 1991 as a branch of the Franciscan University of Steubenville, Ohio, and since autumn 1996 as the home of the Papal International Theological Institute for Studies of Marriage and Family, the Kartause has been both successfully renovated and revitalised. True to the philosophy of the Carthusians, this site is once again a centre of intellectual pursuits, with a significance extending far beyond the borders of this country. www.kartause-gaming.at
