This old Roman bridge along the Canal du Midi inCapestang, France is one of the narrowest and lowest bridges along all the canals in France.
Boaters must calculate their vessel’s measurements before attempting to squeeze through or risk tearing off their wheelhouse – even if it is the collapsable kind, as in this picture. There are stories about boaters recruiting folks at a nearby restaurant to climb on and act as ballast in order to pass under the bridge!
This particular boat made four attempts over half an hour to squeeze through, giving those of us on land a great show! They eventually had to completely collapse the wheelhouse, and still just about made it – note the tiny car on the back of the boat!
