I am enjoying my semi retirement and being able to concentrate on painting exactly what I like!
I have always admired Constable’s painting and this is the first stage in producing a large ‘The Haywain’ based on the famous painting. However Constable painted in oils of course and I use watercolour, so the challenge is to try and get similiar effects with a different medium.
So this 20 × 16″ watercolour of the famous Willy Lott’s cottage, minus the haywain, done on saunders waterford 140lb NOT surface using Windsor & Newton artists paints, is part of the learning process.
haywain, constable, watercolour, challenge, water, reflections, willy lotts cottage
As a painter of light, legend and landscape I am indebted to the wonderful medium of watercolour which gives me the versatility to incorporate many different styles in to my work.

Something about this one feels like one of the great Masters painted it! Really love the water and the reflections, perfection!
Thanks Allison- that is a real compliment. Constable wasa great observer of nature and wanted to get it right. Now for the haywain…..!

Brilliant painting, Glenn, Consatble would have been envious !
I doubt it George but thanks anyway! The initial offer for his now priceless painting was just seventy guineas and from a frenchman at that! The great man indignantly turned it down. Incredibly he sold this as a pair for just £200..can you believe it!
