Tumulus by Moonlight - Garrowby Hill by Glenn Marshall

Tumulus by Moonlight - Garrowby Hill by

There are three of these tumulii situated on the top of Garrowby Hill which is the highest point on the Yorkshire Wolds overlooking the Vale of York.
These were possibly ancient burial sites and the mounds have been left untouched surrounded by cultivated fields.
The moon seemed to be trapped by the circle of trees!
I sketched this earlier this year and produced this watercolour on Saunders Waterford 140lb NOT paper using Windsor & Newton artists paints.

As a painter of light, legend and landscape I am indebted to the wonderful medium of watercolour which gives me the versatility to incorporate many different styles in to my work.

Between the long shadows and the position of the clouds brings this image right towards the viewer. Excellent composition Glenn, very nicely done.

  • Thanks Jim – I was also attracted by the impacted snow remaining on the south side of the trees – it made them seem like silhouettes.

Wonderful atmosphere in this one, Glenn. I love the limited palette, as always, and especially those wonderfully long shadows. Beautiful watercolour.

  • It’s a very interesting place Bev with a timeless atmosphere of being left alone for a long time.

Yes, what everyone has said! It nearly reads as an abstract at first glance, so interesting! such great depth too:-)

  • Thanks Leslie. I agree with you about the shapes. I also liked the contrast between the ancient unchanging trees and the transient hay bales.
