The Quick and the Dead

Glenn Marshall

Bridlington, United Kingdom

Artist's Description

I have always been interested in contrasts and this scene highlighted the vibrant life surrounding the dead tree. Another name for hawthorn is quick thorn – ‘quick’ in the old useage meaning ‘living’.
It accquired this name when hawthorn hedges began to be used as boundaries – ‘living’ boundaries.
The original watercolour was done on Saunders Waterford 140lb NOT surface with W & N artists paints.
