The Quick and the Dead by Glenn Marshall

Available to buy on…

I have always been interested in contrasts and this scene highlighted the vibrant life surrounding the dead tree. Another name for hawthorn is quick thorn – ‘quick’ in the old useage meaning ‘living’.
It accquired this name when hawthorn hedges began to be used as boundaries – ‘living’ boundaries.
The original watercolour was done on Saunders Waterford 140lb NOT surface with W & N artists paints.

boundaries, contrasts, hawthorn, quickthorn, trees

As a painter of light, legend and landscape I am indebted to the wonderful medium of watercolour which gives me the versatility to incorporate many different styles in to my work.

The white tree on the right looks as if it is making a dash for the next wood! Fantastic colours and composition Glenn. You are so talented.

  • Never noticed that Linda – you are right – maybe the tree is the ‘quick’ part!

    Pam :)

  • Thanks Pam- it is a ‘busy’ painting but as always it is the light that makes the scene.
