“The inspiration for this painting came as I was reading a fascinating book called ‘Turner in the North’ by Professor David Hill. The book contains reproductions of pencil sketches made by Turner on his first trip from London. Some of the sketches were worked up into finished paintings, sometimes many years later.
As far as I know this sketch was never painted by the great man, so it was ideal materiel for me to use as a base for my interpretation of Turner’s York.
I am very grateful to Professor Hill who kindly allowed me to use the sketch in his book, as well as some interesting hints about how Turner might have worked.”
