An Old Man 1972

A drunken man I saw one day, comin’ down an alley way
Stubbled beard filthy clothes and shoes with cardboard in the soles
staggerin’ from a drunken spree there he is on his knees
a poor old man with no way out wonderin’ what its all about
What with strikes an’ all around what of life he’s tryin’ to drown
a black maria swallows him takes him off and runs him in
be and breakfast in the morning a heavy head when day is dawning
then back again he goes again to drink I wonder what it is he thinks
an old man with stubbled chin wondering where it is he’s been
