Paul & Nicki's Surprise by Travis Easton

Last school holidays (I’m a teacher) I came down with a nasty virus called Erythema Multiforme and ended up in hospital covered head to toe in a horrible rash accompanied by hideous headaches and I barely ate for a week to boot.

During this stay I missed going to what I thought was the long awaited and expected engagement party of my good friends Paul and Nicki. As it turned out they didn’t have an engagement party at all but sprung a surprise wedding on everyone (including some of the wedding party). I was totally bummed that I wasn’t able to share in their special day but recently got to hang out with them for a day where we took a few shots as well.

In a way not my normal thing but then again there’s a waterfall in it so totally my normal thing.

Australia’s rugged landscape is an important part of my life and over many years I have explored some of the more remote parts of it on foot, ski, kayak and rope. I usually travel alone so I can take my time capturing the essence of these places without distraction. Life slows down and after a while I feel like I begin to merge with the land, nature takes me into her confidence and changes me. I hope you enjoy the fruit of these excursions.

Oh ouch!! Poor you. There seems to be a trend to stage these surprise weddings – a bit sad for those who miss out … glad you had this opportunity! What a beautiful shot – they’ll treasure it I am sure.

  • Plan is to blow it up and put it on their wall. I was certainly surprised when I rang up to apologise and was informed of the hitchment, didn’t know this was becoming more common, thanks Rosalie. Worst thing is I got sick on the second day of the holidays and was just well enough to go back to work on the first day back, bummer haha.

Excellent portrait! Wow, what an awful rash…. Glad your better, Travis!

  • Thanks John, I was actually in Tasmania doing a seven day hike about a week after I was discharged. I was really weak for the first few days but came good by the end, doctors thought I was crazy but I didn’t want to miss out, ha.

I hope you are fully recovered now, and feeling better, what a shame to miss the wedding, do they know what gave you the rash? Paul and Nicki looks like they had a great day.
    Cheers
    Rod.

  • Hi Rod,

Well and truly better now thanks. It lasted for about two weeks with another two weeks where I was still a bit weak in recovery. The rash itself was called Erythema Multiforme, what caused it was a virus but what the virus was and how I got it remains a complete mystery.

Totally bummer to miss a good mates special day but what can you do, had to cancel a talk at a photo club as well while I was in hospital. All good now though. We had a ball on the photo shoot day always good to hang out with mates.

    Cheers

Ouch! That’s nasty! Makes me itch! Great shot of Paul & Nicki :)

  • Thanks Carol, thankfully the rash didn’t itch much, was horrible in every other way though, ta.

Now that is a rash! Im glad you got rid of this one.

  • Yerr body did it’s thing eventually, interestingly enough they could of given me drugs to help overcome it but thought in the long term it would be better if my body did it itself so the immunity would be better in future.

Cricky! And, ummm… ouch!! Great image though mate – love the rich and vibrant colours! They must have stayed very still!

  • They were good models, the main problem was waiting to get people free shots as the hoardes passed by.

oh my! Hope I never get that nasty virus… beautiful photo up top.

  • Obscenly unlikely. It’s very rare, in fact so rare that my GP and the emergency dept doctors had never seen anything like it so they called in dermatologists to diagnose the rash. The virus that caused the rash was never identified at all and from the information I read on erythema multiforme the symptoms I had were not quite right either so I’m not entirely convinced it was EM at all (usually it is accompanied by terrible mouth ulcers which thankfully I never had). ta
