Popularity???
I must admit that I have no idea why people gravitate to some images more than others although it’s very nice when it happens. Therefore the popularity of my Wave Rock image for me is somewhat of a mystery. Obviously I’m proud of taking a nice shot but personally I can’t understand why this one is two to ten times more popular than other pics I’m equally proud of.
This one is currently the 159th most popular on the whole of the bub and has just passed it’s 3000th viewing last night, with 221 comments and 127 favouritings. As grateful as I am to everyone for all there support I must admit that considering it’s popularity I’ve found the lack of accompanying sales a little perplexing. Yesterday however the dam finally broke with my first card sale of wave rock to a mystery buyer, so thankyou so much to whoever you are, it appreciated more than you know.
On the other side of the coin my most popular shot off the bub in terms of card sales (I produce my own range) has been Grasstree and South-east Point . On the bub despite being posted around the same time as Wave Rock this one has only been favourited once and has had 172 views and 6 comments. Now don’t get me wrong I’m not complaining I’m simply fascinated by the nature of popularity and how something can be so popular in one place but go almost unnoticed in another and visa versa.
The other interesting phenomena is pics that get heaps of favouritings but hardly any views. Popularity???
Thanks as always for reading and commenting on my inane ramblings.
Cheers

Congratulations on your sale Travis!!!

Congrats Travis – it is simply a stunning image – brilliantly composed and the colours and dynamism of the shot are just outstanding. Running “Sold!” I am constantly amazed at what does actually sell – taste is subjective – simple as that.
Travis Easton replied
Art is so broad and subjective, with my own work I probably loose subjectivity simply because the image is part of a story that only I know. Spose that’s the great thing about the bub and all the groups big enough for everyones skills, tastes and passions.

Well done with the sale.
Quite often, I’m reminded that we, as photographers, need to be our own worst critics in order to realise an image as saleable.
More often than not, what we as the photographer might see as unsaleable, might well be one’s ‘bread and butter’, which proves that ‘beauty is in the eye of the beholder’.

So true, if I rated what shots I thought would be most popular it would bare no resemblance to what is. This would be probably my favourite aspect of rb. As I frame and put a fair amount of work in galleries it really helps me decide what to frame. Then again for the ANZANG comp this year I went off this popularity and for the first time ever I got nothing shortlisted.

Great shot.

From site to sight popularity can be very different for photos. Part of that is a snowball effect. If a photo gets a good start it picks up more votes. If it shows up and is missed it remains there quietly…
Travis Easton replied
Agree totally with the snowball thing MM. I’m sure most of current traffic is due to the fact it’s on page 9 of the most popular gallery.

what you say is very true I quite often think the same with some of my images, who can tell. All the same congrats Travis your images are all fantastic!
Travis Easton replied
Thanks Alf, the mysteries of taste, spose that’s why life is so rich, we’re all so different.

Kudos my friend!

I think you’re making interesting points ~ and ones I’ve pondered and been confused by too. I’m frankly shocked you’ve not sold any of this stunning beauty until now ~! This is the one that brought me to you way back when ~ and the rest is history :)
In the end, I have come to just move with what moves me ~ and when I’ve go off track, then it’s not my “voice” and somewhat less satisfying ~ pretty true in art and life for me :)
Congratulations Travis on your sale ~ and to many more!! xxx

Thanks Linda, the indefinable nature of what moves art artistically. Spose if you could work it out and formulise it the art would be lost.
