Lines in the Sand

Travis Easton

Lines in the Sand

Lines in the sand received a highly commended award in the the black and white category of the 2007 ANZANG Nature and Landscape Photographer of the year competition (ANZANG: Australia, New Zealand, Antarctica, New Guinea bio-region). It also won a first place in a local competition run by Harvey Norman.

It was taken in the immense dune field between Lake Wau Wauka and Iron Prince Reef in the Howe Wilderness Zone, Croajingolong National Park. It is just near Cape Howe on the Victorian, New South Wales border where the coast line takes a dramatic turn north resulting in the sand building up on this rock flanked headland.

On this particular day I had arisen an hour before dawn and witnessed the white dunes absorb all the pre-dawn colours before a spectacular ocean sunrise had me chewing through my film in awe. I wandered around the huge dune field taking advantage of the morning light that emphasized the ripples in the sand. After some inclement weather this part of the dune field had dried out unevenly resulting in sand bands of differing moisture content being blown in alternate directions. The result was this remarkable, and logic defying pattern.

This particular shot was literally the next frame in the camera after my 2006 ANZANG black and white runner up shot, Dunes near Wau Wauka

Featured on the red bubble homepage 7/5/08.

Well seen and captured, Travis! I really like the intimate composition and the black and white conversion is spot-on! I do this quite a bit too; as I wander about in the dune fields in the deserts of southern California. This image really reinforces the notion that photographers should look down at the ground every once in a while (as while as behind them, LOL!). Very nice work, Amigo! Cheers! Chris

  • Travis Easton replied

I completely agree with the looking down comment Chris. In a way it sums up one of the great joys of being in the natural world. I’m constantly amazed at how beautiful nature is at both the macro and grand scale.

Your comment also made me smile. As a bushwalker the temptation as you walk along rough trails is to do nothing but look at your feet so you don’t trip over so I often make a deliberate effort to trust myself not to trip over and look up to absorb my surroundings.

This is just an amazing photo, Travis as is the accompanying piece – it takes the eye of an artist to capture these natural art works and you have done so with the perfect play of light and shadow and the b/w treatment. Sheer poetry actually. Well deserving of many awards – bravo!

  • Travis Easton replied

Thanks Lianne, Photography is so much about learning to see with an artists eye and I love how this just enriches the whole experience of nature. I really believe that photographers literally see more of nature than non photographers. You’re simply more in tune and observant of the little details that others simply walk past without seeing (stopping to smell the roses as it were). Thanks for the comment.

  • lianne

    lianne

I agree with you Travis – perhaps it is photographers who help poets “see” beyond the obvious and take more from those roses than they would otherwise – lol. For that I thank you!
