Cape Howe Dunes

Cape Howe Dunes

Ever had one of those mornings where everything is just perfect, right spot, right light and you just feel in tune with your surroundings. On this day I got up at about 4:30am and took pictures solidly till about 10:30 exploring this massive dunefield and finding amazing scene after amazing scene. An unforgetable morning and spot.

I had no idea Victoria had dunes like this – a great reward for the early riser!

I’ve never seen dunes like this before or since, and I love dune fields and have visited a lot of them. These temporary formations I think formed after rain which dried unevenly in the different densities of sand and then got blown into these amazing formations. Thanks again for the feedback.

magnificient! is this any where near Mallacoota? we used to camp there in the fifties, comletly unspoiled used to take 2 days to drive from Melbourne, only 300 miles mostly dirt track all the way.

  • Travis Easton replied

Yer, this was day two of a four day walk from Mallacoota up to the Nadgee Nature Reserve in NSW. Basically you cross the entrance drop in on Lake Barracoota pass Gabo Island and then there’s an absolutely massive dune field between Lake Wau Wauka and the Iron Prince Reef near Cape Howe. It’s about a 30km walk from Mallacoota on soft sand all the way, magnificient spot. It’s so commercial now in Mallacoota I’d love to have experienced it in your day. Thanks for the comment.

thanks, the entrance used to change every year sometimes way down South and sometimes North. I guess they have put in one of those walls now! There was one general store and one pub! Weused to catch prawns by the bucket full but only used them for bait, had no idea people could eat them ! I still would like to go again one day though.shame I haven’t many pics that show anything much.

  • Travis Easton replied

The entrance has been blocked so often lately that they dredged it out a few years back. On this occassion it was only up to our knees and just 5 meters wide (a few months after the expensive dredging). At the moment there’s a big fuss about building a huge breakwaterl out on Bastian Point to facilitateease of tourist boats access. The abalone guys don’t want or need it and the physical, scenic, and fiscal cost will be massive. ‘Progress’ don’t ya love it?
