Lake Uranus
I took this shot 10 years ago in 1998 on a walk that traversed the Western Arthurs in south-west Tasmania. Although I’d been hiking for years this hike redefined what a considered a hard hike to be and what spectacular scenery is, Tassie is just breathtaking. To give you an idea of its severity imagine spending 8 days traversing a ridgeline of a mountain range and then taking just one day to traverse back along the plains to regain your start point!
It is also the place where the man who really inspired and defined a lot of my photographic aspirations and inspirations died. Peter Dombrovskis once said, “When you go out there you don’t get away from it all, you get back to it all. You come home to what is important. You come home to yourself”. Leaving his mortal coil in such a place for me seemed like the right thing in a bitter sweet kind of way. This particular shot was also one of the first where I felt that I began to approach that indefinable something that some work possess that just fills you with a sense of reverence, awe and inviolability of place.

Beautiful capture, absolutely stunning. I love the narrative too. Its marked and defined you and the words from Peter have been embedded. You obviously listened, felt, embraced and grabbed hold of everything he said. Wonderful inspirational piece. Well done and thanks for sharing those words. They make a difference.

Thanks Sal for your kindred sentiments. Peters work for me just went beyond ‘good’ picture taking and kind of oozed an inate holiness of his subjects. You obviously feel this too which is a wonderful thing.

i’ve heard this is the most beautiful part of Tassie- this is unbelievable as the tourist parts are pretty damn stunning as it is!!

Hi Travis, beautiful image…how did Peter Dombrovskis die, I always wondered what happened to him?

As I remember he died of a heart attack, he had another one a year before and was so depressed by his inability to carry the huge loads he used to, to get these shots that his wife found him throwing his 4”x5” trannies on the fire one night. This was to be his last trip and he had the help of a friend to carry his huge load to the ridge of the range before continuing on alone. Obviously it was to much for him and he was found pack on buckled over clutching his heart. RIP Peter
