Tidal River Reflection

A perfect winters morning, great light and a rare perfect reflection. I took many shots that morning but had to wait a few weeks to get my film back to see if any had come out. This was the one where everything came together, composition, light and technique. To balance the amazing disparity in light between the shadowed foreground and the bright background I used an ND4 Graduated filter. This filter balances the exposure by only letting one quarter of the light through the top part of the lens as compared to the bottom. The eye is so sophisticated that it automatically compensates for these differences so judging the effects of the filter is basically an educated guess and because I shoot on film I have no on location way of assessing the results and re-shooting if I mess it up. This shot is one of my all time personal favourites. It was also the group avitar for ‘All water and seascapes’ a little while back and was my first laminated print sale on the bub.

What a superbly composed shot – you are the master for connecting foreground to background in landscape – the Wizard of Wideangle!
Thank you for your lovely comment on my last lightning shot.

  • Travis Easton replied

I’m a huge fan of Dombrovskis who was THE MASTER of foreground interest, my problem is seeing the shots that work without the foreground thing. Thanks for the encouragement King Geoff.

this is so gorgeous, I love the Prom, you have to send some time there to get great weather like this though.

  • Travis Easton replied

So true, I’ve been there 22 times since 1991 and 13 in the last 3 years. The number of times and the amount of effort I’ve expended returning to the same places time and again to get a specific shot in the right light is enormous but what a great excuse to visit again. At least this location is only a two minute walk from the car.

after shooting digital for 4 years I can’t imagine waiting for a film to come back. I guess this proves that winter is good for some things…. cold still and colour depth. Bravo

  • Travis Easton replied 24 days ago

I love winter often the light is so much better than in summer, the sun is lower in the sky for longer and on blue sky days you can often shoot all day long unlike in summer when it gets really harsh really quickly, Thanks mate.

Fantastic shot! I think I would have gone bananas with such a reflection :-)

  • Travis Easton replied 22 days ago

I did go bananas but due to the huge dynamic range messed most of them up and I was shooting velvia so didn’t find out until they got developed, but hey this one worked… ta
