Mt Mackay

Mt Mackay

In July 2007 I did my first ever snow shoe walk. A trip from Falls Creek out past Pretty Valley to Tawonga Huts and the Niggerheads then over Mt Fainter and down to Bogong Village. The downhills aren’t as fun as my crossies but the uphill and flats are a dream much easier manoeuvrability for photography too. Great trip had some good weather and some bad -the following day was a whiteout. This shot was taken just near the summit of Mt Niggerhead looking towards Mt Mackay which borders the Falls Creek ski resort.

You said it Simone – the snow is perfectly exposed and the front to rear interest is fantastic. Nice little narrative too Trav. Thanks.

    love it Travis, love it.
as everyone else has said it’s great from front to rear.
the eye runs perfectly to the peaks in the background.

snow shoeing is awesome fun. went last time i was in the snow, and i can’t wait to do it again! probably got something to do with me also being extremely gifted on the skies- extremely gifted in falling over on skis anyway! lol. bein a West Aussie i guess I have an excuse though :-P

  • Travis Easton replied

Crossies with a pack on in steep virgin snow is hard work in anyones language. Still hard work on the snow shoes but at least you don’t have to balance on the suckers or worry about your tread/ wax gripping when going uphill.

Being a west Aussie must be a convenient excuse for lots of things I imagine… ahaha. thanka mate.

stunning composition and scenery Trav – Itsounds like it was a great adventure too mate !

  • Travis Easton replied

Was an awesome trip I submitted an article to wild from this trip but it’s sat with them (slides and all) for years now and the editors changed so the mag now has a more international and extreme rucksack sports edge to it now so I don’t know if anything will come of it. If your interested I can email it to you. If I post it here it’ll be a used article then and no-one will want it. Have a good un.

What a view it must have been up there! A beautifully composed image and a fabulous capture! Thank you for sharing this with us mere mortals!!

  • Travis Easton replied

Thanks as always John, twas an amazing trip. I had done it years before in the summer but it took three more attempts in winter before it all came together and I completed the circuit back to Bogong village.

oh, a bit of banter hey. so that’s how you roll. it’s now in the memory banks buddy! :-) haha

yeah i can’t even do the standard skis with no pack- so i won’t bother trying cross county with a pack lol. i’m alright standing and going in a straight line, the turning and especially stopping is what i struggle with.
they’re talking bout a big indoors ski center being set up near me which would be awesome!
least get some practice in before heading across next time!

but will stick to snow shoeing i think- walk all day is something i can do no problems lol

Beautiful landscape!. It reminds me of the area around Fairbanks, Alaska. I sure can’t wait until the snow starts dropping in Montana. Only a few months left until we’ll be making some turns.
