Red Bluff
Another shot from my recent family holiday to Lake Tyers with my new 5DmkII. This was my first sunset with the new toy and I had fun experimenting a bit more with my neutral density graduated filters to compare results. I shot the scene with 2 & 3 stop ND grads to see how they compared my fav being this 2 stop ND grad.

Nice composition…lighting looks nicely balanced. Travis, I am curious of your use of ND Grad filters when the camera has the Auto Lighting Optimizer function.
Travis Easton replied
I can’t say I’ve played with the auto Lighting Optimizer and will need to do so but I would be absolutely gob smacked if it could process light of such vast difference in brightness as well as the human eye that would truly be a wonderous development in camera technology. As I understand it large format camera’s can handle a larger dynamic range. I’m new to digital but from what I’ve seen on the bub ND grads seem to used as commonly with digital as they have film. Mel Brackston just wrote an interesting little journal entry re her use of ND grads.

This demonstrates the tonal range of the 5D Mk II perfectly. Have you thought about getting a reverse ND grad to try out for sunsets/sunrises?
Travis Easton replied
Sure have been looking at the Singh Ray one but they are way expensive and I am way broke at the moment postage is AU$75 too which doesn’t help. One day.
