Lake Tyers Sunset
Another shot from my recent family holiday to Lake Tyers with my new 5DmkII. The light was amazing and now that I’m shooting digital I was experimenting more with filters and bracketing with my fav being this stop under with a full length 3 stop neutral density graduated filter. Now that I’ve shot a few frames to be honest I’m not seeing digital as a step up colour wise compared to my old Velvia shots with these sort of sunset shots (outside of the orange sunset it seems a bit colourless and grey too me). For waterfall, low light and wildlife it leaves Velvia for dead but I think Velvia will still have a place in my arsenal in certain situations.

Nice composition. I think you’re right about film. With Fujichrome Velvia 50, I think there would be more ‘snap’ to the colors especially the yellow red. But you can increase(in camera) saturation with digital.
Travis Easton replied
Interestingly enough it’s not really the yellow and reds that bother me it’s the weird way its gone to almost black and white in the remainder, thanks for your opinion.

AWESOME SHOT ,MY FRIEND

Hey mate… perhaps a higher ISO may have helped and I have been also using my WB to give me better clarity of true colour and sometimes still have to adjust as I load thru lightroom…
BUT having said that I STILL dont really understand how all this works…lol

I love the mood to this Travis – it captures the tranquility very well. If you’re shooting RAW you often won’t get an accurate depiction of what you photographed I’ve found. I did have this explained to me once but it’s something to do with the way all the information is recorded in RAW. RAW assumes you’ll want this information later in the processing. You’ll find the colours you want are actually there when you come to process – they just aren’t obvious. With RAW taking the pic is very much only half the story – the rest is processing and I’ve found that comes with practice and is SO worth having RAW format for. Often it’s caught detail and colour I hadn’t realised was there – particularly in the less obvious parts of the image. That said, Velvia is a pretty high bar for any other technology to match.

hi trav i shoot all my photos in raw i find it to be accurate with only a small amount of p.c work .but if you compare film and digital i will be inetrested in the out come.

Oh goodness – so smooth – excellent Trav.

I am excited by the 24-70 and what it can do after seeing this particular image. I’m nervous about about going as low as f22, but not so much as now!
Travis Easton replied
For years I had it set at f/22 by default, now I set it at f/16 and only go beyond this if I absolutely have too. In this case I felt it was necessary and am happy with the result, thanks mate

Very Nice work Travis,
You have some really strong compositional elements all working together to make a photo of great interest. Excellent exposure and use of the the old style cokin ND filters you do know you can do that in photoshop? (JOKES!) I still carry around some of the P series 2,4 & 8 ND Grads when I snap a few on film.
Did you find any amount of vignetting using them on the 24-70 f/2.8 and what do you think of that lens I recently got one with my 5D MKII and it and its quickly become a fav walk around lens but I’m not too please with it’s hyperfocal abilities.

My goodness, you do some fine work. Another beautifully executed capture and presentation.
