First Light South-west Point

First Light South-west Point

Wilsons Prom’s South-east Point is extremely popular and is visited by thousands of people every year. It has a lighthouse built on it (circa 1859) with superb accomodation available in the old lighthouse keepers cottages. The three cottages at SE Point accomodate 28 people and are frequently booked out in addition to this many bushwalkers pass by the spot as well.

In contrast to this South-west point is visited only rarely. According to the ranger I booked our trip with the last party to pass by was in 2006. Considering the fact that there are over 400,000 visitors a year to the Prom this rarety of visits is quite amazing. It is very well defended however and few would be willing or able to pay the price in accessing this spot. Day one 21km in four hours on track (Tidal River to South Point), day two 2.5km, 10 hours off track (South Point to South-west Point).

The island in the background is called Anser Island.
