Take nothing but photos - Leave nothing but footprints

This shot was taken in the immense dune field between Lake Wau Wauka and Iron Prince Reef in the Howe Wilderness Zone, Croajingolong National Park. It is just near Cape Howe on the Victorian, New South Wales border where the coast line takes a dramatic turn north resulting in the sand building up on this rock flanked headland.

On this particular day I had arisen an hour before dawn and witnessed the white dunes absorb all the predawn colours before a spectacular ocean sunrise had me chewing through my film in awe. I wandered around the huge dune field taking advantage of the morning light that emphasised the ripples in the sand. After some inclement weather this part of the dune field had dried out unevenly resulting in sand bands of differing moisture content being blown in alternate directions. The result was this remarkable, and logic defying pattern.

Wow and wow again – I love especially the extra picture you added to the right – monochromatic shot (was this intentional or just the early day colours?)

  • Travis Easton replied

Hi Gaylene, thanks, Wau Wauka Dunes was shot on colour velvia slide film and latter converted to black and white.
