Feathertop
Mt Feathertop (1922m) is the second highest peak in Victoria, Australia. Some hard core skiiers make the arduous journey there to ski it in winter and in summer it’s a very popular hiking destination. Most mountains in Australia are high points on alpine plains and are therefore not very precipitious. Feathertop is an exception to this rule standing by itself and is therefore one of the most picturesque and photographed mountains in Australia. This particular shot was taken from the Niggerhead Range on a three day snowshoe trip I did in June 2007.

Wonderful. That is a view that not too many people see in person, particularly in the winter! Feathertop indeed has to be about the most photogenic mountain in Australia, and it is nice to see a different angle to the shots you normally see taken from along the Great Alpine Road & The Razorback.

Hi John, thanks for the comment, I agree that classic Hotham view of Feathertop is almost as cliched as the 12 apostles at sunset. I certainly was blessed to get here in such fantastic weather. I’ve submitted a story I wrote to wild magazine so hopefully that’ll get published eventually. Thanks for dropping by. Love your snow shots too and read your how to snow calendar thing the other day too. Had to laugh when I read James’ comment about anything more summery. Funny snow shots, people love em but it’s rare for them to sell, second last one I sold the woman bought back later on to trade in on a more ‘summery’ one…?

That’s the beauty of winter all is born anew and considering this area was devestated by bushfires 6 months before and has a few tracks and roads close by, its pristine winter state is even more poignant. Thanks for droppin by again Stephanie.

WOW!! This is perfect I find it really hard to capture snow that well … I love how you captured the sparkle and the texture of the snow so well!

The secret is to get up before dawn so the sun is still low enough in the sky to sparkle off the snow. My original plan was to camp on this ridge line but I woosed out and camped in a nearby cattlemens hut thinking I could get up before dawn and still be on the ridge line by first light. I did so but still missed the first golden rays but the light was still good enough for this one to work.
