Plane Crash

High above the world,
we forget that we can fall.
A failure of suspension,
A moment of motion unsustainable
brings the shock of knowing
as our masks drop down in panic.

These are our minutes,
and these are our seconds,
this is the end of all our time.

Peeling metal skin
dissolving in descent:
we count the times we felt,
we count the times we hurt,
and we count the times
we wanted to be more than this.

Screaming wings disintegrate in rushing air,
we shoot like stars to die like strangers.
Deaf in the noise and blind in the fear
We come too quickly to meet the Earth.

Impact flash, and shattered crash
Shuddering dirt and splintered steel
scattered across the scarring ground
we are part and particle of the chaos
borne from the weeping sky.

We know not who we are,
buried like burnt seeds.
Alone in the wind, ash and heat,
we are the last – you and I.
Eyes dripping glass with tears,
stunned that we are still here.

Battered, bruised but aching with life
We cling to each other
Our flesh more real than ever,
and our hearts forever indestructible.
