Badly Chosen Lover (after Rosemary Tonks)

Lover, we were a dream until my
circular shape no longer squeezed into
your square hole.
You left me, stuck and exposed
like a diseased Elm.
Fool, I still love you,
I smuggle my tears, set my face to the wind
and smell hard for direction.

Lover, you took my full stomach and
made it hunger for crumbs,
you lost me my dancing feet
and left me incomplete like three chairs
at a square table.

Lover, you broke me, like a wild stallion
you put a halt to my gallop
in a way I can never forget

and I can never forget.
