Cuddles from the one who loves me

The teddy you see in the image has been with me since i was about 10. My father found it at a turn off while driving home and gave it to me and called it ‘turn off’. I have not seen this teddy for years since moving home and starting my own family.

My mother recently gave it to one of my girls and as soon as i saw it i remembered who he was. Felt it was only appropriate to use him as a prop and shoot my girl with him. He originally also had a vest and a cowboy style hat..
My relationship with my father is not good. Never has been and never will be. I guess when he gave me the bear i was still able to be loved by him. Or, he just had no one else to give it to at the time

A sweet picture and treasured, if compromised, memory for you. I would say that your father did care for you, even if he wasn’t very good at it. It can be found in small, simple things like this, where more heart can be put into a gesture than in the daily round. And possibly some unspoken regret.

little gestures can be lovely. Sadly they don’t outweigh the bad memories of a nasty father.

When I was 3 years, my father arrived home from work late one night. I ran to greet him in the kitchen and he gave me a teddy bear. Mother was nonplussed, assuming he’d bought it from some gypsy in a tavern. My parents hated each other, and my father could be a brutal SOB, but never was to me. Only time he hit me was a spanking demanded by my mother, designed more to punish him than me. They’re both dead long ago. I carried that teddy for 37 years, he and I having great adventures, if only in my mind, while sitting on a floor. My daughter then took custody, and I haven’t seen him in many years. Odd, the power of art, to trigger an old fool’s memory. Lovely portrait in a well balanced composition, especially the light/shadow nexus.

I hope you’ve been able to think back on some good times :)

Oh I’ve been blessed all a lifetime, just didn’t recognize or appreciate sometimes. And remorse is akin to a cabernet, it’s complex character best contemplatively savored in sips between fork-fulls of perfectly prepared entree, soul-food menu changed daily. God bless and keep you and yours always, all ways, Tracy Wallace.
