A Hoosier in Illinois
When I moved from Indiana this past May to live with Tim in Danville, Illinois, I became very homesick. As I walked along outside one day, looking down, I was surprised to find this brick in our front walk. It is now officially “my” brick.
I looked this company up online and here’s what I found, if anyone is interested:
“The oldest paving-brick plant in the state is the Indiana Paving Brick Co. of Brazil. The first vitrified brick and block were made by the company in 1891, and three years later it furnished the material for the first street paving in Brazil. The product since that time has reached proportions that are not readily comprehended in mere figures, and from the beginning this has been more than a local industry. Many cities and towns of the state have their streets paved with the bricks made at this plant, and the product has gone by train-loads to Louisville, Cincinnati and other cities beyond the state borders.
The plant is in the western part of the city just north of the Vandalia Railroad. The raw material was formerly obtained altogether from the shale deposits near the intersection of the C. & E. I. Railroad.”

Tracy, I moved from Indianapolis three years ago and miss it so much…how nice to spy this photo of the brick. Made me even more homesick but more…filled with wonderful memories. Thanks!! Perfect for this challenge, you get my vote!

Thanks so much, BarbL! I almost got teary-eyed when I found this brick. I know it sounds silly, but I was having some serious bouts of homesickness when I happened upon this, and just sort of attached myself to it lol. Thanks for sharing! :)

A lovely story Tracy, and I think it just shows you are where you’re meant to be, with Tim. :-) This brick signifies a strong foundation, and they are just as sturdy far from their place of origin. Great!

Thank you, Enivea, what a lovely comment! I did take it as a good sign, and a good comparison of our relationship. :)

Love the brick and the story Tracy having grown up in Brazil and while I no longer live in Indiana my yard has many Brazil bricks scattered about. There are still a few back streets in Brazil that are brick streets by the way.
