Taking a trip down memory lane… When I was a child, my parents were missionaries in the Philippines and in the area where we lived, all of the missionary families used to make these cookies regularly. They are like a cookie version of a brownie, and so good! I resurrected the recipe recently and my kids love them as much as I used to (and still do)!

  • Thanks so much for the feature! And I’m happy to share the recipe: here it is!

    1/4 c. (60 mL) butter or margarine, softened
    2 c. (500 mL) sugar
    3 eggs
    2 tsp. (10 mL) vanilla
    4 – 1 oz. squares unsweetened chocolate, melted
    2-1/2 c. (625 mL) flour
    2 tsp. (10 mL) baking powder
    1/2 tsp. (2.5 mL) salt
    1 c. (250 mL) icing sugar

    1. Cream butter and sugar. Beat in eggs, one at a time. Mix in vanilla and chocolate.
    2. Stir flour, baking powder, and salt together. Add to butter/sugar mix, and mix well. Shape into 1" balls.
    3. Roll balls in icing sugar. Coat well. Arrange on greased baking sheet and bake at 350F (180C) for 8-12 minutes.

    Makes 6 dozen.
