Come mothers and fathers

Throughout the land

And don’t criticize

What you can’t understand
Bob Dylan

This beautiful boy is checking out the toe that he just hurt. I believe that to empathize with a child’s pain, or any other feelings that they have, validates their reality and thus enables them to know that what they are feeling is true. If they are told that it isn’t a big deal and that it shouldn’t hurt, this may cause them to doubt their own feelings. This I know from my own experiences.

Lovely work and totally agree with your thoughts. While we don’t baby our 2 young children, we never tell them to “get over it” or “it’s no big deal” when they get hurt. We never discount and instead validate their feelings. It may just be a quick “Aw, I’m sorry” or a more thorough examination.

  • Glad we’re on the same page here, Joe. Thank you for your comment. Just wish you could make it down to Trillium in June.
