The color of the sky as far as I can see is coal grey.
Lift my head from the pillow and then fall again.
With a shiver in my bones just thinking about the weather.
A quiver in my lips as if I might cry.
Well by the force of will my lungs are filled and so I breathe.
Lately it seems this big bed is where I never leave.
Shiver in my bones just thinking about the weather.
Quiver in my voice as I cry,
“What a cold and rainy day. Where on earth is the sun hid away.”
I hear the sound of a noon bell chime. Now I’m far behind.
You’ve put in ’bout half a day while here I lie
with a shiver in my bones just thinking about the weather.
A quiver in my lip as if I might cry,
“What a cold and rainy day. Where on earth is the sun hid away?”

Do I need someone here to scold me
or do I need someone who’ll grab and pull me out of this
four poster dull torpor pulling downward.
For it is such a long time since my better days.
I say my prayers nightly this will pass away.
The color of the sky is grey as I can see through the blinds.
Lift my head from the pillow and then fall again
with a shiver in my bones just thinking about the weather.
A quiver in my voice as I cry,
“What a cold and rainy day. Where on earth is the sun hid away?”
I shiver, quiver, and try to wake.

TeenScreen Schools and Communities is an Effective Program for identifying youths at risk for depression and suicide. I believe that many suicides are preventable if the teens knew that help is available and where to go if they need it.There have been more than a few suicides in our town and surrounding communities. Teens tend to be impulsive and may commit suicide without knowing the reality of of their decision.

An estimated 8% of 12-to-17 year olds or (2 million young people) experienced at least one major depressive episode during the past year.
• Only 39% received treatment.
Complications of untreated teen depression are far-reaching and may affect many aspects of a young person’s life, including:
• School absenteeism and decreased performance.
• Strained relations with parents and siblings.
• Withdrawal from peers leading to reduced support systems.
• Emotional distress.
• Increased chance of smoking and excess alcohol and drug use.
• Potential for suicide.

Suicide is the third leading cause of death in 11 to 18-year-olds.
• 15% of U.S. high school students report serious thoughts of killing themselves in the past year.
• 11% of U.S. high school students report making a suicide plan in the past year.
• 7% of U.S. high school students report attempting suicide in the past year.
• 2% of U.S. high school students report having made a suicide attempt that required medical attention in the past year.

The majority, 63%, of teen suicide victims exhibit psychiatric symptoms for more than a year before their deaths.
• For every completed suicide, an estimated 8 to 25 attempts occur.
• 75% of parents did not know about their child’s self-harm behavior.
• Fewer than one in five adolescent ideators disclose their suicidal ideation and between 30% and 60% of suicide attempters do not disclose their attempts, with only 10% of suicide attempts being known to parents.

We were lucky, my child told a social worker at his high school, and we were able to get him the help he needed. He is fine today, in college and free from depression. Since he has learned the importance of mental health and has the tools to know when and where to get help, I hold great hope for him to live a long and happy life. ( But I’m always watching, not hovering, but always watching for signs.)

sailing into the storm can feel like trying to open a door made of cement all heavy and dark…looking for a light, any light to show that calmness can be seen in in the waves when the sun is hidden away.
exceptional image tori..my eyes are drawn in immediately and there is a feeling of importance, to keep looking for and with the sun(son). …this information is so important. i touch my heart with you in the strength of the journeys. i am so glad for that social worker..and smile in the hope.

  • I am so glad for that social worker, too. He is the most incredible human being I have had the chance to meet. His work with teens is incomparable. My daughter met him her freshman year, helping her transition into high school. I introduced him to my son when he began 9th grade and just knowing he was there always gave me peace of mind.
Thank you for your beautiful words on my work, Terri. The way you describe what you see and feel, made the effort I put into this worthwhile, knowing that this is understood.
’i touch my heart with you in the strength of the journeys ’ It is a journey, this life, and sometimes we need all the strength we can get, and knowing people are there for us makes it a little bit easier.
