Dignity—the quality of worth and honor intrinsic to every person—establishes basic entitlements that are the unalienable birthright of every human. It is our intrinsic legitimacy. We are worthy simply because we exist. Dignity is the threshold level of status required to meet basic human needs. It establishes the basic boundaries of humanity. Indignity—trespassing into the territory established by dignity—is the essence of insult, humiliation, and the root of anger, shame, and hate. This trespass is the basic tool of tyranny, oppression, and coercion. All of history is the quest for dignity. We are worthy simply because we are alive; it is a cruel injustice to deny someone their inalienable worth. Dignity is a congruence between the respect we demonstrate and the intrinsic legitimacy of each person.
~The United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights
In our own families, we must preserve every members dignity. This can be trying, because some members need to be in control. Through modeling children can learn respect for others. Their dignity, and sense of worth will remain intact if they don’t experience shame, and humiliation. To accept others that are different starts within our own families.
We live in an increasingly diverse world, even within our own family structures. The concept of the “nuclear” family does not predominate in our society as it once did. More children are being raised by single parents, by same-sex parents, in blended families and in families with mixed race, religion and ethnicity.
Because young children form ideas about themselves and other people early in life, it is important to begin teaching anti-bias lessons early and to help children recognize and accept differences and see similarities beyond the surface. If we reinforce these lessons, children will learn to appreciate, rather than fear, differences and to recognize bias and stereotypes when they see them. We know that children need to be reassured that differences are fine. The exposure to families that may not be like their own, in particular, encourages tolerance and acceptance.
