Frequently found but not as common as its red cousin, this Wild Opium Poppy (Papaver setigerum), is a very close relative to the real Opium Poppy ( Papaver somniferum). However it does carry traces of morphine. Although it is quite frequent in Mediterranean countries in is not classified as a Maltese Indigenous Plant.

Nice sharpness and DOF, love the colors.

  • Thank you Marvin. I’m glad you like this picture. I was lucky to have seen these poppies on the side of a country road where I could stop.

Tony, I saw some big red ones once, in our neighborhood. Took pictures of them as I thought them so pretty! But have no idea if they were the real thing!. If they caught you growing them, you would be in a lot of trouble, here….so I can’t imagine them being the real thing. A mystery still. Good capture you have here!. :) XXMight upload it, so you can see what you think.. :)
  • It is the same over here. You cannot cultivate this type of poppy , but as I said, they grow wild nearly all over the Island. However, I think the process to extract the morphine would be too costly for anyone to try. Thank you for your visit and comment my friend. God Bless.

Wow Tony, marvellous poppies..I prefer this colour to the red ones. You have such wonderful wild flowers but don’t put your nose too deep in them to hume their perfume..you could fall asleep!

  • Hello Betty. Thank you for your visit and humour. I like it. My friend, the smell from these poppies is quite repulsive. They emit a strange strong smell when touched and it stays on your hands for a long time. So rest assured, I’ll think twice before I smell them.
