An alley in the oldest and once most industrious part of Valletta. A deserted block of houses and stores dating back to the 17th Century. Still lived in some 50 years ago they now await their turn to naturally crumble down and make space for more modern apartments.

Andrew S
Such a wonderful scene you have captured Anthony, but what a shame that they will just be left to crumble.
Anthony Vella replied
Thank you Andrew. These buldings are protected in a way that they cannot be demolished. However, since they are of no use to their ownews and are just a sleeping asset, they leave it to the elements to take their toll, and once they crumble down and become an eyesore, then new buildings are erected in their place bringing greater revinue to the owners.
AnitaInverarity
Great capture !! x
Anthony Vella replied
Thank you Anita. Pleased to know you like this picture.
smallfox
What a shame that they should be replaced, with so much character and the unique local style. (Of course, I don’t know what they’re like to live in.) This is a great shot showing how cool they might be on a hot summer’s day. Beautifully caught with lovely tones.
Anthony Vella replied
I agree with you smallfox, but unfortunately that’s how things are over here. Thank you for your visit and kind comment.
natalia martin...

Mark German
Such a special place – and to think I thought nothing of it when I was young…
Anthony Vella replied
Hi Mark. I think as one gets older, one appreciates more the things which were taken for granted when young. When you love Art, history and nature, you tend to look at things in a different way. Thank you for your visit and comment my friend.
NatashamenoN P...
Amazing capture Anthony, well done :)
Anthony Vella replied
Thank you Natasha. Appreciate your visit and kind comment. Thank you also for adding me to your watchlist. .
hilarydougill
wonderful capture, what a shame they will just rot away, they are so much more substantial than modern buildings, and have so much more atmosphere, the light on these is wonderful. hugsxxx
Anthony Vella replied
Thank you Hilary. Appreciate your kind comment my friend.
alexkess
Great Photo. Could you please add some information on your HDR Technique and workflow, i.e the Software used, how many exposures, how many stops apart, handheld or on tripod. Please resubmit with the info and we will be more than happy to accept into the HDR Group.
Anthony Vella replied
Thank you Alex. I’ve just added all the info you requested.
Barbara Corvino
Interesting and historical place.
What a shame that these houses will not be restored.
Ciao. Barbara
Anthony Vella replied
Ciao Barbara. Grazie. Thank you for your visit and kind comment.
GailD
This is brilliant Tony. Texture, colour & ambience. What a shame they will go.
Anthony Vella replied
Thank you Gail.I just love these old streets and alleys in Valletta. They all have a lot to tell. I agree with you …its a big shame to see them replaced by other more modern buildings, but what’s to stop them once they become ruins. They cannot be restored as it would be too expensive.
DeborahDinah
Just love it – so atmpspheric – not one thing I would change about it. Perhaps you could start a campaign to restore them for future generations?
Anthony Vella replied
Hi Deborah. I guess you’ve lived long enough in Malta to have a god idea as to how things are done over her. You know by now how many old and historic buildings have met their fate to make way for money. And I guess you know well enough thatI for one cannot do anything about it. You know that Wied il-Ghasel (The valley of honey) in Mosta has been classified as a world heritage site by UNESCO, and yet MEPA, has authorised building permits on top of historical areas. You also know I think that LIDL supermarket at Safi Village has been built on top of a lotof punic graves. Thats Maltese politics for you my friend. Thank you for your visit and kind comment .

I so agree with you – first came as a visitor way back in ‘74. – and watched a transformation!!! Still – if you ever need an assistant to start a campaign I am willing!
Anthony Vella replied
Thank you my friend but I never fought battles which were already lost before they started. Still I admire you for your audacity.

rasnidreamer
Another fabulous image my friend. I love the soft treatment you gave it, ans as always—your lighting is impeccable! The inevitable demise of these “regal” (I’m sure they were to somebody at one time or another) buildings saddens me; yet I have seen it happen in my own home town. It’s like the cycle of life. Personally I would choose this life to the newer more modern one strange as that may seem.
Anthony Vella replied
Hi Sue…..same sad old story wherever you go I guess with no exceptions. I miss the countryside of my childhood days which has now been turned into a concrete jungle, I miss the laughter of my childhood days when we children used to play in the middle of trafficless streets with approacing cars being heard minutes before they arrive near us….yes Dear Friend, I miss the good old days of peace and tranqility of my childhood, when we had nothing but more than enough!. Thank you for your visit and kind comment my friend.

Gilberte
NIcer to take wonderful photos than to live in.
I have looked a long time at your shot, commented and then forgot to click add comment. The old age!!!
Anthony Vella replied
Hi Betty. Come to think of it, for the homeless, places like these would be God-sent. I can’t see anyone sleeping inside a cardboard box on a pavement, door-step or inside a back alley (certainly not in Malta!) ever refusing a roof over his head such as these buildings have to offer, as shabby as they might look or be, especially during wet, cold and snowy Winters. Thank you for your visit and kind comment my dear friend.
Lori Peters
CONGRATULATIONS!! THIS WORK IS FEATURED IN: A PLACE TO CALL HOME.

Thank you annalisa. Greatly apreciate your visit and kind comment
Matthew Walters
Very good capture – it is nice when a local photographer highlights the areas tourists would typically rush by. The photo gives an interesting contrast to the beauty of Valletta.
Anthony Vella replied
Thank you Walter. Amongst other things, I look for places which are the least frequented or visited by people. This is one example.
M G Pettett
They make a great picture but isn’t it a shame that they are left to crumble!
Anthony Vella replied
Yes Mike…it is truly a great shame if historical buildings like these are left to crumble, but as a Maltese, I guess you know that everything over here is done with a purpose. Thank you for your visit my friend.
Waleska Luker

Anthony Vella replied 23 days ago
Hi Sable….I don’t know anything at all about you, but I’m glad I brought back happy memories for you with this image. If you’ve been away from the Island for a long time you’ll find quite a change. Thank you for your visit and kind comment.
sable 23 days ago
Hello Anthony. I was born on the island but have lived in Australia for most of my life. My last visit was in 1991.Dad grew up in Valletta in an orphanage and my Aunt still lives there, I have been watching your work almost since I was introduced to RB., not only because of the memories, but your images are captured so beautifully. It makes me feel like I am back there again.
Anthony Vella replied 23 days ago
Hi again Sable. Thank you for the honour of following my work. Always nice to know that your efforts are being appreciated, and in your case a pleasure to know it has been bringing back pleasant memories for you. You’ll find that Valleta hasn’t changed that much in these last 18 years….not much room for gevelopment, but some areas have had a sort of embellisment. I’ll leave it all for you to enjoy on your next visit. Once again, thank you for your interest in my work. Greatly appreciated.
