San Lorenzo at Night

San Lorenzo at Night

On Sunday, August 10th, 2008, is the Feast of San Lorenzo (St. Lawrence). It also marks the 1750th Anniversary from the Saints Martrydom. The Feast is celebrated in the old City of Vittoriosa, in Malta and in the Village of San Lawrenz in the sister Island of Gozo. The Church in the picture, dedicated to Saint Lawrence, is the one of Vittoriosa. Vittoriosa is one of the oldest parishes in Malta. The original Church served as the Conventual Church of the Order of St John before the building of Valletta, and St. John’s Cathedral. The present Church was built between 1681 and 1697 and was designed by Malta’s most prominent Baroque Architect, Lorenzo Gafa. It is a fine example of Roman Baroque.

Nice angle Tony. Pity about that monstorous mound spoling the whole facade of the church! If there was a mondial msiplaced-monument competition i’m sure that one would win hands down!! I wish they would just grab the statue (which happens to be hardly visible as is anyhow), put it further up the hill and demolish the nasty mound! The church would stand proud once again as it was meant to be. It needs the space!!

  • Anthony Vella replied

Hi Astrid. Thank you for your visit. I’ve answered your bubble mail if you have time to look.

Wonderful image Anthony, i love feast time….......

  • Anthony Vella replied

Hi Marcus…..Thank you. I don’t know how long you’ve been in Malta, but I guess feast-wise, you must already have had your fill! Traditional feast time is great. I come from Zabbar and our feast (Our Lady of Graces) is celebrated on the first Sunday after September the 8th (Our Lady of Victory). Traditionally our feast is the last one for the summer and it attracts a lot of people from all over the Island.

Nice shot! I’ve been to this feast a few times but it was on the 10th not the 3rd August. Was it moved this year because of the clash with the feast of the Transfiguration?

  • Anthony Vella replied

Hi Avalon…..you’re right. I guess I made a blunder. With all the festivities comemmorating the 1750th year from the Saint’s Martrydom (fireworks too!), I thought it was scheduled for Sunday 4th, now I’m positively sure is is to be held next Sunday (the 10th). Astrid has already sent me a bubblemail drawing my attention to this fact. Thank you for your visit and comment my friend and sorry if I’ve mislead you in any way.
