Caper Flowers
The Caper – Capparis spinosa, is well known in the Mediterranean region for its edible bud (and fruit) marketed under the name of Caper Berry, which is usually consumed pickled. It grows quite freely in the wild countryside especially in rocky regions. Capers are a distinctive ingredient in Southern Italian, Sicilian and Maltese cooking. They are used in Salads, Pizzas, Meat and Fish dishes. Examples of uses in Italian cousine are Chicken Piccata, and Salsa Puttanesca. They are also used in most Fish Sauces and to garnish Fish Dishes. Capers are also used with cold Smoked Salmon, Cured Salmon and occasionally as a substitute for Olives to garnish a Martini.

Wow Tony, the flower is as beautiful as the caper is lovely to eat.I love capers.Do you know you can also use nasturtium seeds to pickle in replacement of capers?
Anthony Vella replied
Hello Betty….I think you know by now that anything purple in colour attracts me like a magnet. These flowers were no exception. I too like Capers. In fact sometimes I pick them from the wild and pickle them myself…..they cost a furtune in Supermarkets!. I never knew this about Nasturium seeds. Thanks for the news. Thank you for your visit and comment my friend.

Hi Tony, Nasturtiums are edible flowers and so are their seeds. You can eat them raw, but try only one, they are very hot but lovely.I have pickled some; they shrink a bit, become brownish like capers and taste the same.
Anthony Vella replied
Thanks Betty…I’ve just read about Nasturtiums. There’s quite a lot you can do with them. I’ll try one when and if I’ll get the chance. Thank you for your piece of information. You’re so cultured my friend.

Beautiful Tony and edible as well!! WOW…Wonderful blooms…wonderful capture!! *-)
Anthony Vella replied
Hi Deb…thank you for visiting and commenting so favourably. The edible berries are the round and pointed flower buds which could be seen at the back, below and to the right of the flowers. They taste great when pickled and added to fish dishes and wine based sauces.
picketty
well they are a staple in my pantry but i never knew what the flower looked like
Gilberte
Nasturtiums are easy to cultivate.Just put the seeds in the soil and you’ll have a rain of flowers, beautiful to garnish the dishes and they are edible too.But I love capers with fish; have not yet tried wine based sauces.Do these sauces accompany meat or also fish? A pity we cannot exchange plants but capers may not grow in our cold countries.

Hi Thordis….beautiful flowers aren’t they. Of course I do not think they would grow in your beautiful country….it would be too cold for them I suppose.

G’day Toninu,
Your lighting/exposure/processing, good focus and use of depth of field have rendered a superb photograph of these interesting flowers.
Take a look at the thumbnail on the Featured page and see if you would rather this in a square crop. I feel it greatly enhances the presentation by eliminating a lot of “dead” area and taking good advantage of the diagonal of the flowers.
[A big CONGRATULATIONS on making the Featured page too!!]
Lovely colour and those fine stamens stand out so well against the dark background.
Very good work that man!

Sharon Perrett
Wow, what a stunning flower, and I love the info you with it as I have never seen these before although I use capers a bit, Lovely detail and clarity
Anthony Vella replied
Hello Sharon….I don’t think you’ll ever see capers growing in the wild in UK like they do in Malta and most of the Mediterranean countries. Not even in the South where you live and I very much doubt if the Isle of Wight will support their growth either. However you can boast of many beautiful flowers around your area though. I’ve seen quite a few well kept beautiful public and private gardens on my visits to the UK. Thank you for your visit and kind comment.
