Snail in Morning Dew

This is the Maltese Edible Snail – Cantareus apertus. A once very common land Mollusk. Mercilessly hunted (gathered) for food as it is locally regarded as a delicacy ( like escargots), and poisoned by farmers who consider it a pest. A Hermaphrodite. It lays its eggs (between 40 and 60) in a hole it digs itself in the soft loose ground ( like Turtles, Tortoises, Aligators, Crocodiles etc.) It Hibernates inside rubble walls and under loose stones during the Summer months to preserve its moisture.

I agree with Scootycat!!!! Great Shot!
I consider it a pest and I’m not eating it. I hope I’m never that hungary…....Pat

  • Anthony Vella replied

Hello jaypat. Thank you for your visit and comment. Sometimes I wonder who is really the pest. The types of ‘humans’ who seek nothing but wealth, power and popularity in their lives or poor defenceless creatures who seek nothing but a means of survival in a world taken over by dominating humans.

Ah thats a sensational shot! it’s so clear…well taken Tony

  • Anthony Vella replied

Hello Alf. This as you see is a ‘non-doctored’ macro shot of one of our native snails. I myself was quite surprised with the result. I guess I was lucky to have everything in my favour. This is one of my favourite shots. Thank you for your visit and coment my friend, Sahha u grazzi habib.

  • Anthony Vella replied

Wow this is the most clear photo image I think I have ever seen. Almost feel like I’m right there, but glad I’m not to close to this cool looking snail.

  • Anthony Vella replied

Hi Rita. Thank you for your visit and comment. Snails don’t bite so there’s no reason not to be close to them. They’re neither that repulsive. I must admit that they are a bit slimy, but nothing that normal soap and water can’t wash away. So next time you encounter one, pick it up. They are amazing creatures. They can move on the blade of a razor without cutting themselves.

  • Anthony Vella replied

Greetings Betty. So sorry I missed your visit. The small field where my brother and I have this small shack is sometimes littered with snails. They provide a spectacle at times with their manouvering up and down trees. shrubs and plants. Thank you for your visit and comment.

Hi Laura. The ability of this small, but heavy in comparison to size, Mollusk to achieve such acrobatic feats is unbeleiveable, but very worthy to digitally record. Glad to know you like this picture and appreciate your visit and favourable comment.
