The Chiv & The Goose
This painting came out of the poem below which was inspired by the Liberty of the Clink – the South Bank of London during the seventeen hundreds.
864, The South Bank
My name’s Pan, but they call me Chiv.
They give me a wide berth,
Those who know me,
But those too foolish to be coy,
Like boys soft and searching
For a romping
Find my slack frame can make them brave –
A knave at hand for kicks
And for punches.
How brave this is, the upper class –
The arse with rolled up sleeve
And tongue poked out.
“Come on then scum and take some pain,”
And again threats from toffs –
Knock my block off.
“Leave him be,” pleads the goose he paid
Who laid and lied with smiles.
She can act well.
She’s not soft from the city pens.
A hen, like me in the gutters
Of the south bank!
So this wank comes here by water
To daughter of Ishtar
Too poor, but rich,
And having dipped his skinny wick
Is quick to prove his might
Against the Chiv?
Quick his blood flows and red like mine.
This time I used a pick
To stick flesh with.
Once, twice, thrice, in the neck I stab.
A jab for luck and love.
His purse jangles.
The goose in lure of lace scarlet
Is harlot to me known
As a lover,
Who comes over for a quick kiss.
“I miss you when you go”
She says smiling.
I’ve been gone an hour at most,
But boast not of our love
And liberty –
Of her path cobbled and stony
Which only leads to me –
Who deserves less,
Yet lives in the light of a King
Who sings with royal heart
In thanks to love….
For these streets are full of hardness.
And to goddess I love…
...”I killed for you.”

Tony, I will admit that in my own far flung reality, it often takes me some time to actually go about looking over the work of those on my Watchlist, and usually, I’m contented by what I see, but little more.
This combination of the historical, artistic, literary, visual, on and on, Jesus Christ, it’s the stuff I honestly love. You know, that love which comes to heart and mind before any actual thought…
The work you chose to base this on is great of its own merit… a love sonnet of sorts, brutally leading, like a candy trail, to a harsher truth, while even so one can’t help but feel no dismay. Your style is perfect for such a work, and though I believe you mentioned a stylistic or “of the times” failing in the artistic semantic in which you create (in your RB Profile), I couldn’t disagree more…
I know little of the times, and care even less. The very same goes for artistic tradition. I appreciate pure merit within a work when it exists, period. I love all the pieces in this form you’ve made… I really like the form itself. It is unique, but not in the sense of when one tastes something bad and calls it “interesting.” Instead it is relatively unrivaled, and I’ve yet to see another artist who could express in this way you do.
It sounds perhaps cheesy, but such triple, hell quadra-threats as this are my most cherished symphonies. Forgive pretty words used to try and explain something so basic as respect and a drop of envy – but then I’ve always been a bit too eloquent for my own good. (Wordy that would be… I’m too wordy…) :)

G. Merrick Justice must have read my mind. Or maybe I’m reading his? Extremely amazing. I enjoy the technical opportunities we have in art today, but my passion lies in straight photography, paintings, sketches, etc. Anything technology has not touched. It brings out the heart of the artist more sincerely, in my opinion.

Great imaginative piece of art inspired by a beautifully gritty poem. Don’t know much of the history of the region but great way to take inspiration. You should look into the “Exceptional Ekphrasis” and the “Inspired Art” groups. Keep up the good work.
