Statue of Buddha in the main entry to the Zhinan Temple, Taipei, Taiwan

Accessed by the Maokong Gondola from the Taipei City Zoo, Zhinan (also Chi Nan) Temple is located in the hills of Mucha, 285 metres above sea level.

Founded in the late 1800s it is one of the oldest temples in Taipei.

Zhinan Temple honours Taoism, Buddhism and Confucianism, with four main halls, five secondary halls and many walkways stretching out into the grounds.

One word of warning however. Popular legend has it that unmarried couples who visit the temple will not be long together.

One explanation given is that Lu Tong-pin, the main deity of Zhinan Temple, is jealous of lovers and will do his utmost to separate them.

The Tourism Bureau site says,“The main deity in this temple is Lu Tunpin, one of the Eight Immortals of Chinese legend. He is a well-loved deity, despite a reputation for somewhat randy behavior.”

This shot was taken with my Pentax k-r on 5 October 2012.

February 24,2014 Congratulations on making Top Ten!

  • Hi there. Please excuse my late and standard “copy and paste” thank you response, whether it be for challenge result, feature, fave or comment on my work. I have just undergone two cataract operations and having difficulty reading or typing text for a couple of weeks until I can get new reading glasses. Distance vision is amazingly clear and sharp so maybe I should take a wireless keyboard and sit on the other side of the room. All the best.
