Japanese covered bridge on one of the walking tracks in the Emu Valley Rhododendron Garden at Romaine in North West Tasmania.
The garden is widely known internationally and its unique design makes it one of Australia’s major rhododendron gardens. there are over 20,000 rhododendrons and other select plants set among 11ha with a series of “countries” from which the wild rhododendrons originate, within authentic built environments.
Emu Valley Rhododendron Garden offers walking tracks, lakes, bridges and many other unique design features, as well as a resident platypus, echidna and diverse bird life. The Tea Room is always a welcome and restful diversion for visitors.
The Garden features:
the amphitheatre consisting mainly of rich volcanic soil which was never farmed. The walls slope moderately steep into a large stepped basin fed by several natural springs forming a series of lakes.
landscaping including four lakes, waterfalls, several bridges, several gazebos, long dry stone walls and numerous paths and internal roads.
native fauna such as wild ducks, native hens, grebes, many other bird species, platypus, echidna and some reptile species. Native flora include many tree and fern species.
the garden is classified as a plant museum. As such it is a repository for many species of the genus rhododendron that are or may become endangered mostly due to human activity.
