THE HMB Endeavour’s tall masts and rigging contrast starkly with the glass and steel skyscrapers in Brisbane’s CBD as the 18th century replica lies moored at Eagle St wharf on the Brisbane River in early May 2011.
Brisbane is the first port for the square-rigged sail training ship, which embarked from Sydney 12 days ago on the first leg of its 13-month circumnavigation of Australia.
The Endeavour is a near-perfect replica of Captain Cook’s famous barque of the same name, crewed by 16 professional sailors and 40 paying crew members.
Captain Ross Mattson said the experience of sailing the ship was a step back in time.
“Out to sea we sail the ship as Cook would have done 241 years ago and stepping on board gives the general public a great insight into how Cook and his crew sailed this vessel,” he said.
He said the trip from Sydney had been a little rough at times and at one point foul weather brought down six waterspouts around the ship.
