These young hens don’t seem to miss having a male to rule the roost and are happy with each others company so long as one of them doesn’t get one step ahead.

Lovely girls and I bet you like the tasty fresh eggs. Good thing they are not Rhode Island Reds, I used to breed them and if you don’t have a rooster one of the hens will change sex. They can do everything but fertilise eggs.

  • Thanks Odille. I must say the one second from the left looks a bit sus. No eggs yet according to my friend the owner who just bought them. Maybe they are a little young or need to settle in.

They look like young pullets, they should start laying at around 20 weeks from memory. And we are going into autumn when egg laying naturally decreases. If he keeps a light on so they have at least 12 hours good light per day he’ll get more eggs. I used to use a timer switch from 4am to about 7-8pm at night.

  • Thanks for the expert advice Odille. I will pass it on to Jane and Jake. They have a nice little enclosure that gets the sun but I don’t think they have put a light in the coop yet. Tony
