The yacht at far right is Gretel II.
Owner Michael Maxwell brought the wooden International 12-metre class yacht back to racing in 2009 after purchasing the America’s Cup challenger of 1970 and 1977 from the Sydney Heritage Fleet in 2005.
The Alan Payne-designed yacht was skippered by Sir James Hardy in the 1970 Challenge by the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron for the America’s Cup and after being remodeled, another Squadron member Gordon Ingate led a so-called ‘dad’s army’ challenge in 1977. Ingate later donated Gretel II to the Sydney Heritage fleet.
The now 84-year-old flew down from Sydney at the invitation of current owner Mike Maxwell to steer Gretel II to a line honours victory in the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania’s 40 nautical 2011 Australia Day Green Island Race – nearly a quarter of a century since he last helmed the yacht in a race.
