On Friday 14th October 1881, a violent European Windstorm struck the South East Coast of Scotland. During the next few hours, 19 fishing boats were lost, foundered at sea, or smashed on rocks while trying to gain safe harbour. In all, 189 East coast fishermen lost their lives that day.

This poignant memorial on top of the cliffs, just off the B6438 road as you enter the Fishing Village of St Abbs in the south east coast of Scotland, in the Berwickshire area of the Scottish Borders was sculpted recently by Jill Watson, to commemorate the surviving widows and children of the 3 fishermen from St Abbs who lost their lives that day.

At the time of the disaster, St Abbs was known as Coldingham Shore, the name was changed in the 1890’s to St Abbs. The new name was derived from St Abb’s Head, a rocky promontory located to the north of the village, itself named after St Aebbe.
