On Friday 14th October 1881, a violent European Windstorm struck the South East coast of Scotland. During the next few hours, 19 fishing boats were lost, foundered at sea, or smashed on rocks while trying to gain safe harbour. In all, 189 East coast fishermen lost their lives that day.
This poignant memorial at the head of the track to Cove Harbour at Cove Hamlet, in the Berwickshire area of the Scottish Borders was sculpted recently by Jill Watson, to commemorate the surviving widows and children of the 11 out of 21 fishermen from Cove who lost their lives along with 3 of the harbour’s 4 fishing boats.
