North Carr is a unique historic vessel, the last manned Lightship in Scotland, largely unaltered since she came off station in 1975 after 42 years of service off Fife Ness, when she warned shipping away from the North Carr Reef.

Now moored in Victoria Dock, Dundee next to the Apex Hotel, she is the headquarters for Taymara, a maritime training charity serving the local community.

This is a marvelous catch of a fading institution. Probably the most famous example in the US is the Nantucket Lightship, which is of a different configuration from the North Carr, but which has a fabulous history. I was a voracious reader as a kid (& still am), & I remember asking my dad what a lightship was when I ran across the term in some book or other, when I was maybe 8 years old. He explained it to me, & subsequently found some books with pictures & other information. Funny how your excellent photo brought all this up! Great work on all counts, Tom.

  • Thank you Sheila, the history is indeed fascinating and in the case of the North Carr, tragic. In 1959 the 9 man crew of the RNLB Mona was lost as it heroically attempted to evacuate the crew of the North Carr in a tremendous storm. The North Carr has never had an engine, it was always towed on station then anchored in position so it was at the mercy of the storm which was threatening to sink it.
