High up on the Tarpon Springs Boulevard (the only real road on the island of Halki (Chalki), Greece), looking down on a built up winding section of the road. A black car shelters under a tree as a lone rider on a red scooter braves the fierce heat as he climbs the mountain road.

Halki is a small, charming island, part of the Dodecanese group of Greek islands, situated opposite the west coast of the Island of Rhodes.

The residents of Tarpon Springs, Florida, USA endowed Halki first with money for its stone clock tower, and, more lately, with the money to build the road to the Monastery of St. John far up in the mountains – the Boulevard Tarpon Springs, which took about 6 years, being finished in 1995.

I love roads like this even though they are hairy to drive………this is fantastic Tom!!

  • Thank you Faro, there are probably no more than a dozen 4 wheel vehicles on the whole island so the road is always very quiet. It gets more difficult to negotiate the higher up it goes …

  • Wooops sorry Fara, finger slipped …

I’ve just returned from the fierce heat of Baja California Sur, and I can feel your pain! The roads are where all the locals walk……beaut shot Tom, and once again, thanks for the extra history!

  • Thank you Mel, the only good thing is it tends to be a dry heat here so the humidy is quite low …
