The shot was taken from a cruise ship in the narrow strait (The Strait of Pelješac) which separates the island of Korčula from Pelješac.
The building and tower on the hill is a charming Franciscan monastery, Gospa od Anđela (Our Lady of the Angels), built in 1470, which nestles 150 m high above the town of Orebić and holds a museum and valuble art collection. It once was used as a lookout point for invasions from the sea. Inside, the walls are hung with a series of paintings done on wood, mostly donated by seafaring men. Each commemorates its donor’s escape from death during a storm.
It has always been a long tradition for the local seamen to sound their whistles as they pass the monastery as a sign of gratitude and thanks for protection.
